It’s Not What You Do

"May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, even to the Israel of God." (Galatians 6:14-16)

Wanting to perform at a level of excellence is admirable. The problem is we are not created to be excellent at everything. However, the world seems to expect us to be, and we sometimes develop an unrealistic expectation of ourselves.

Our human tendency is to base our value on how well we perform. We struggle to accomplish much; seeking to find a sense of worth and purpose. When we do well, we feel good about ourselves. When we don't meet the expectations that we or others have placed on us, we see ourselves as failures.

Consider the possibility that in trying to earn the love of God and others through how we perform and what we accomplish, the truth that God loves us for who we are can be overshadowed. You may have heard it said that we are human “beings,” not human "doings."

God loves you for who you are—His creation. He loves you unconditionally. He won't love you any more, or any less, because of your performance. Take comfort in knowing that who you are is more important than what you can do. In God's eyes, you are valuable because he created you and loves you. You belong to him not because of what you have done, but because of what Jesus did for you. When you accepted Christ as Lord and Savior, you became a new creation.

It is not what you do. It is what God is doing, and he is creating a new life!

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
