On a Journey

Life is often seen as a journey to God that begins at conception and ends at death. The start of the journey can be difficult. Some people appear to be given certain advantages, while others have very few. But who you are at the end of your journey is more important than what you had at the start.

Think of your journey as a train trip and your birth as your boarding pass. Your ticket lists your destination as “Uniting with God.” Some of the train stations are school, careers, marriage, and later a nursing home. These stops may be a source of joy and success, or failure and sadness.

Most of us will pick up some unwanted baggage along the way such as failed relationships, missed opportunities, or things done and words said that can’t be changed. Thanks to God, Christ loves us and forgives our failures when we ask Him.

When we are young, the train appears to move slowly and there are many places to visit. As we get older, the train appear to travel much faster, and the stops become fewer and fewer.  Ultimately, the final destination does not seem so far away anymore. The death of a relative or friend well before their time upsets us. And it becomes clear that our ticket could be canceled at any time.

Although the way ahead may not be perfectly clear, we should fear no evil, because our Father is always with us.  God reminds us that, “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” (Isaiah 46:4)

Don’t let the journey of life be one of apathy, or fear.  That happens when you don’t know your destination, or the Engineer driving the train.  When our journey follows the route given by Jesus, He will be alongside us on the train, helping us with the trials and troubles of life.  He has traveled this route before.  And He will be waiting with outstretched arms at the end to welcome us into our Father’s House.

1 Corinthians 2:9 tells us, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.”

Please take a moment today to think about this.  Are you on the right train?
