Our Last and Only Hope!

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

Have you taken a good look at the world around you?  As you do would you say that it is a better place or a worse place than just a few years ago?  You will quickly see that our world, our nation, our culture, our economy, our politics and our families are in a steep decline.

As a Christian, do you sense the imminent return of our Lord Jesus Christ?  Across the face of a lost and dying world you can write despair, for that is what they're feeling.  If using our newest technological advances, or our latest philosophical insights, we had an answer to what we see, don’t you think we would have made use of it by now?  Our science has created as many problems as it has solved.  It would seem that whatever hope remains lies somewhere outside of our human abilities.

In reality, there is only one great hope for our world, our nation, and our churches.  That hope is in the person of Jesus Christ alone.  We call it the Good News, the Gospel.

The Second World War had been over for years, when it was discovered that there were Japanese soldiers still hiding in the Pacific islands.  No one had contacted them with the news that World War II was over.  Japan had surrendered.  They could have been home with their families, but they had not received the news.  The last aging soldier was found and given the news, but he refused to accept it. He thought it was just a trick to get him to lay down his weapons and surrender.  Only after his commanding officer was brought personally to the island did the old soldier really believe that the war had ended and he could go home.

God Himself came to deliver the Good News to us, to tell us that the war was over between heaven and humanity.  He put on flesh and walked among us and finally went to the cross to seal the message with His blood.  This message, the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, is that last great hope for this world.  According to this message, we have been given the power and the authority to deliver a message of hope to a lost and dying world.  Is it not time for us to wake up to the urgency of getting that message of salvation to all those who have given up hope?

How many people do we encounter every day that are looking for hope and not finding it?  Is that not what missions are all about?  We have the message of hope.

Are we so indifferent, so busy, that we have no time to tell them?

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…” (1 Peter 1:3)
