A New Creation in Christ

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”  (2 Corinthians 5:17-20)

Do you ever feel like your emotional life is being held together by duct tape?  American’s spend billions of dollars every year on mental health treatment trying to fix the problems caused by the past.  Secular psychologists and counselors believe that 90% of the psychological problems suffered by adults started with things they experienced as a child.

Many researchers conclude that although psychological counseling can help you deal with issues from your past, your brain will continue to be shaped and influenced by these childhood experiences for as long as you live.  Let me say that from a human perspective, they may be right; but God has a better idea. It’s called being born again.

Scripture says that you can “…be transformed by the renewing of your mind...”  (See Romans 12:2)
The Bible agrees with psychologists that the human mind is very impressionable.  Scientists say that they can see physical changes in the surface of the brain and in the chemical reactions in the brain after traumatic experiences.

But God says that your mind can be transformed and renewed into the mind of a new person.  The American Psychological Association says that some traits, such as homosexuality, are born into a person and they can’t be changed, but God says “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creation the old has gone away and the new has come.”

In 2 Corinthians 5:17 we read, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation…”  The word “therefore” refers us back to verses 14-16 where the Apostle Paul tells us that all believers have died with Christ and no longer live for themselves.  Our lives are no longer worldly; they are now spiritual.  Our “death” is that of the old sin nature which was nailed to the cross with Christ.  It was buried with Him, and just as He was raised up by the Father, so are we raised up to “…live a new life.” (Romans 6:4b)

I do understand that the traumas of life are real, and the pains of the past are real, and I don’t want to minimize that.  But if God is all powerful, and we know that He is, then we must believe Him when He says that He can re-make your life, and free you from the memories and the pains of your past.  To be transformed means to be so radically changed that the new person is totally different from the old person.

That is God’s plan for your life.
