Have You Been Broken?

“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)

In this world, broken things are hated and thrown out. Anything we no longer need, we throw away. Damaged goods are rejected, and that includes people.  In marriage, when relationships break down, the tendency is to walk away and find someone new rather than work at reconciliation.  The world is full of people with broken hearts, broken spirits and broken relationships.

Everyone will go through some kind of tragedy or pain in their lifetime, and sometimes that pain can leave us deeply hurt and ultimately broken.  It is a part of life and a result of sin that cannot be avoided.  The word brokenhearted means “broke into pieces.”

All through the Bible we read about men and women who were broken and crushed in spirit.  David, the writer of this psalm understood deeply what it meant to be brokenhearted.

David was told at an early age that he would one day be king of Israel, however it was many years later before that occurred.  Saul was the current king of Israel and he wanted to put David to death.

King Saul pursued him to great lengths, and eventually David was forced to flee his own country, away from family and friends to a foreign land.  In fact, when this psalm was written David was forced to run away to the land of the Philistines.  How crazy is that?  David feared so much for his life that he went to one of Israel’s greatest enemies, the Philistines.

It was there that David finally reached the bottom, feeling broken and alone.  I want you to have a good picture of this scene.  Here, we find David all alone, fearing for his life daily, no family, no friends at his side, and he is living in caves hiding out from his enemies.  Do you think David wanted all this to happen?  How would you feel in his situation?  David was broken into pieces and crushed in spirit.  He probably felt at times that God had abandoned him.

In our lives today we may not be forced to live in caves or fear for our lives, but we experience things that do leave us broken.  Did you know that in your brokenness God is still near to you?  There are many different reasons that God allows certain things to happen to us and we may never know why.  What we can know for certain is that God is close to you and He will save you.  You will never be the same, but God will deliver you.

Surrender to God and allow Him to make you whole, to give your life meaning, purpose and joy.  Trust Him.  “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
